What are the best things to cook in a slow cooker?

Our favorite things to cook in the slow cooker are things that we like extra juicy and tender and can benefit from a long cook time, or recipes with quite a bit of moisture, like these Crockpot Soup recipes.

These are the types of recipes you can start early in the day and let them cook for a long time without sacrificing flavor or texture.

We also love quick slow cooker recipes! These are dinners that we can put on and cook for 2-3 hours if we just need to step out of the house momentarily but will be back to eat dinner.

Recipes like this Slow Cooker Chicken Breast or Crockpot Mac and Cheese are good examples of quick slow cooker recipes we love!

Can you put raw meat in the slow cooker?

Absolutely!

It’s actually very rare that I will sear meat before adding to the slow cooker.

One of the biggest exceptions is ground meat, which really does need to be cooked in advance for the recipe to work well.

As far as different cuts of chicken, roasts, steaks, etc. — these can all be added as is!

There are times you may want to sear the meat first to build flavor, like in this Slow Cooker Pot Roast (which is delicious!), but it’s a step you can skip if you need.

My favorite crockpots and slow cookers!

  • Most often, I’m usinga 2.5 quart casserole style crockpotthat Ilove. It is wider and shallow, so you don’t have to stack everything up and it cooks more quickly. It is the perfect crockpot for someone cooking for 1-4 people and not doing large meals.
  • I also havea 4 quart crockpotthat I use when I want to do a larger cut of meat, like a pot roast, or a big batch of soup. It’s everything I love about my 2.5 quart in a slightly bigger size.
  • I do have a6 quart Hamilton Beach slow cookerthat is great for cooking for a large group of people, but I do find it’s a little cooler and sometimes large chunks of meat have to be cut down into smaller pieces for it to cook by dinnertime.

FAQs

How do you make slow cooker meals taste better? ›

If you take an extra 10 minutes to sauté the aromatics before scraping them into the slow-cooker, the finished dish will have deeper flavor and better texture. (And some new slow-cookers allow you to sauté right in the insert, so you don't have to wash a separate skillet.)

Can you put everything in a slow cooker the night before? ›

Make-ahead when possible: If your slow cooker has a removable insert, assemble the ingredients the night before and refrigerate the entire insert overnight. It's important to note that starting with cool ingredients may lengthen cooking time (but be sure to keep them out of the temperature danger zone).

Does fat melt in slow cooker? ›

Once your slow cooker is just about full of beef fat, turn it on low. It will slowly start to melt, don't be tempted to rush this process by turning it up. Allow to cook for about 6-8 hours on low and stir it roughly every hour or so to prevent it from burning.

Why are slow cooker meals watery? ›

This is the effect that you want to happen when you've added the right amount of water. However, sometimes too much water is accidentally added or the slow cooker fails to evaporate enough water during the cooking process, leaving the sauce or soup a little runnier than you'd like.

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low in a slow cooker? ›

The difference between "High" and "Low" on slow cookers seems to differ with every brand and model. One thing that is consistent, though, is that food takes seven to eight hours to reach a simmer point (around 210°) on low; versus three to four hours on high.

What cannot be cooked in a slow cooker? ›

10 Foods You Should Never Make in a Slow Cooker
  1. Raw Meat.
  2. Seafood.
  3. Pasta.
  4. Rice.
  5. Delicate Vegetables.
  6. Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts.
  7. Dairy.
  8. Wine and Other Liquor.

Is it OK to leave crockpot on low overnight? ›

Is it safe to leave a slow cooker on for 12 hours? Yes, you can use your slow cooker for longer than eight hours, as long as you keep an eye on it. Many slow cookers do have an automatic shutoff after 24 hours.

What is the best meat to cook in a slow cooker? ›

Choose the right cut: Chuck roasts, short ribs, pork shoulders and lamb shanks (think fatty and tougher meats) become meltingly tender with the moist, low heat of a slow cooker. Leaner cuts like pork tenderloin tend to dry out. Likewise, dark meat chicken — thighs, drumsticks, etc.

Can you put raw meat in a slow cooker? ›

Yes, you can add raw steak to a slow cooker to cook it to your desired doneness level. Slow cooking steak is a convenient way to cook steak over several hours, tenderizing it and adding exceptional flavor along the way.

What's the difference between a crock and a slow cooker? ›

When we look at the material, it's evident that slow cookers and Crockpots consist of the same three components: Glass lid, pot, and heating element. However, Crockpots generally have ceramic or porcelain pots, while most slow cookers have a metal pot.

What is slow cooking in fat called? ›

Confit refers to the process of slow cooking and storing food in fat. Confit is a French word that means "preserved." In the confit method, meats are cooked in fat for a long time at low temperatures. This renders tough cuts like duck legs more tender, and when stored in duck fat in a cool place, they last all winter.

What thickens slow cooker? ›

Cornstarch, potato starch, and chickpea flour are a couple of pantry-friendly ways to thicken soups, stews, and sauces in the slow cooker. Just a tablespoon or two of any — added towards the end of cooking — will thicken sauces especially well.

Does taking the lid off a slow cooker thicken the sauce? ›

Take the lid off

Place the cooker on a high setting, and open the lid for 30-45 minutes to let excess moisture cook off. The liquid will reduce, leaving you with a thick and delicious gravy or sauce. (Tip: This trick can also be applied for thickening stews, or when you've accidentally added too much liquid.)

Why do slow cooker recipes taste bland? ›

Because you don't get the same concentration of flavors as you do on the stovetop or in the oven, slow cooker meals can end up tasting a little bland or muddled. In order to make the flavors pop, it's often necessary to add something fresh to the dish before serving to perk up the meal.

What happens if you don't put liquid in a slow cooker? ›

Not adding enough liquid can lead to burning.

"It's important to add enough liquid to ensure the bottom of your dish doesn't burn."

Why is my slow cooker food tasteless? ›

At high heat you are drawing moisture out of the meat. You will also lose more of the flavours that you tried to preserve all along by the low heat. Just start with very little liquid. It may just take some time to figure out which meals work well for you in a slow cooker.

How do you add flavor to bland stew in a slow cooker? ›

Cooking the onions, garlic and other aromatics in the fond ensures that flavour makes it to the slow cooker. If you're adding wine, it won't get hot enough in the slow cooker to cook off the alcohol. This can leave your stew with an unpleasant taste.

How can I make my cooking more flavorful? ›
