𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝟯: 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀Since 2008, Amref Flying Doctors NL has been working with the Masai community in Kenya and Tanzania on an Alternative Rite of Passage to prevent Female Genital Mutulation. Amref works closely with the local community on female circumcision, child marriage and the importance of education for girls. Once all community members agree that they no longer want to circumcise their girls, the ceremony follows. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘆? Do they indeed continue to go to school? Do they marry later in life and thus also become mothers later? And: do they remain uncircumcised, or are they at risk, and are interventions necessary? To understand their impact while also keeping an eye out for the girls, Amref is now using the Tracking the Girls digital application. UNICEF Nederland's Jongeren Prinsjesdag 2023 (Youth Prince's Day); an event where the dutch youth took the opportunity to inform our politicians on topics they want to see tackled in the parliament; war, climate and poverty.It was incredible to see a room full of passionate youth; aiming to change the vision of our nation. I hope their voices get heard and their advice is taken to heart.
