Shardlake: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2024)

81% Tomatometer 27 Reviews 82% Audience Score 50+ Ratings Shardlake’s sheltered life as a lawyer is turned upside down when Cromwell instructs him to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners at a monastery in the remote town of Scarnsea. The commissioner was gathering evidence to close the monastery and it is now imperative for Cromwell’s own political survival that Shardlake both solves the murder and closes the monastery. He leaves Shardlake in no doubt that failure is not an option. Cromwell insists that he is accompanied by Jack Barak to Scarnsea, where the duo are met with hostility, suspicion and paranoia by the monks who fear for their future and will seemingly stop at nothing to preserve their order. What to Know

Critics Consensus

Well acted if a bit unconvincing in its verisimilitude, Shardlake's fast pace keeps it from feeling like a dry tutoring lesson on Tudors intrigue.

Shardlake: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) With a window of a few days and a constrained budget, the show doesn’t have the immersive breadth of this year’s breakthrough period smash, Shogun, but the foreboding air and rogues’ gallery of monks make this more than a mere whodunit. Rated: 3.5/5 May 24, 2024 Full Review Shardlake: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) John Powers NPR I feared that Shardlake would serve up the Tudor era's usual cavalcade of castles, codpieces, clopping horses and quasi-Shakespearean lingo – "Prithee, stop, sirrah!" But to my surprise this odd, beautifully acted show pulled me in. May 8, 2024 Full Review Shardlake: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Nick Hilton Independent (UK) The premise is excellent and the set-up compelling... [But] the show slips into something muddier and more generic. Stabilising the scales between history and mystery is a challenge, then, and one that Shardlake just barely balances. Rated: 3/5 May 3, 2024 Full Review Shardlake: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Ana Yorke PopMatters Within life's rich pageant, there's nothing quite as enticing as the tapestry of history and our collective relationship to its most prominent narratives. Jun 5, 2024 Full Review Shardlake: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Melissa Camacho Common Sense Media The dark and moody series offers viewers a compelling murder mystery while staying true to the religious politics of the Tudor era. May 21, 2024 Full Review Shardlake: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Andrew Anthony Observer (UK) This new series goes a long way to doing the books justice. Arthur Hughes as Shardlake maintains a satisfyingly ambiguous expression in which lofty contempt vies with deep sympathy. Rated: 4/5 May 18, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Laura A Just finished the first season of Shardlake. I read all the books some years ago. I agree with other comments that the meticulous historical detail, and atmospheric scene setting of Tudor London that are the axle of the books, is not overly present in the series. But then the books were written by an eminent historian, with hundreds of pages and therefore, hours of time, to paint the intricacies of the scene, whereas Disney are making a fixed length period drama whose main aim is to keep the story moving along. The casting is excellent. Naturally I had my own Matthew, Jack and Guy in my mind’s eye - but the actors in this are brilliant. The first series is pretty much the story of the first book, Dissolution. If Tudor drama is your thing, then definitely give Shardlake a go, whether or not you’ve read the books. I hope very much they make the next book. I also hope the series is a hit, and Disney risk a bit more cash in the accuracy and detail - this is what sets apart a normal binge watch, to a binge watch classic. It would be good if they give a moment to explaining why his horse is called Chancery. It would be good if they used more of the Tudor blasphemy as written in the books - but I doubt Disney will have ‘the lights’ for it. Excellent production, both engaging and atmospheric. I wish it had been more than 4 episodes as there was more space to develop the depth of some of the characters and sub plots. Overall it was top quality. Murder mystery in a tudor setting - what a combo! Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/19/24 Full Review Carol N Different, compelling and great performances by all the cast. Arthur Hughes was first rate. Why haven’t we seen more of him? Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/14/24 Full Review john b Well acted and very atmospheric but we never felt compelled to watch the next episode as the actual mystery gets a little lost until the last episode when all is suddenly revealed. Quite enjoyable but perhaps a few too many characters and a bit too much going on for only four episodes and it might have benefitted from being a six parter. Not a patch on the book.
