So I like to think I’ve come a little ways since my days of quickly snapping a picture of my supper for the blog before diving in. But I have to admit, the though of photographing a big hunk of brown meat makes me a little nervous.

It didn’t help that I laid down on the couch when the girls went for a nap and opened my eyes at 5:00.

Luckily, I didn’t have much work to do on this incredible pulled pork.

It’s always a little interesting trying to get some photos of something we’re eating for supper before it’s totally cold and unappetizing, especially as I’m rushing and trying to make it look like I didn’t just sleep until 5:00pm when the hubs gets home from work.

“Girl, go and start cleaning up your toys!”

“I can’t mom, I have to take pictures!”

Things get a little crowded in our dining room as we’re both maneuvering around the toys on the floor, trying to get a good shot of our supper in between periods of dark cloudiness and too-bright sunshine.

Anyway. We made it.

Am I the only one out there who can’t stand the smell of balsamic vinegar? That is some powerful stuff. It makes my head hurt a little bit.

When I make this honey balsamic sauce, I think the exact same thing: “That sauce smells potent — how can it actually taste good?!”

The truth? It’s incredible. INCREDIBLE.

This is my favourite pulled pork recipe out there.

Ever.

In the world.

It is so easy just to throw a roast in the slow cooker in the morning, and then when suppertime rolls around the only thing you have to do is make the sauce. I mean, you could make a side to serve with it, but we don’t.

When this pulled pork is on the table, I don’t need anything else getting in my way. Just some fresh buns and allllll that dark, drippy sauce!

Try it. Maybe it’ll be your favourite pulled pork, too!

This one of our family favorites! Have you tried freezing this? With the sauce? If not, do you think it would freeze well? I’m prepping ahead of time for all our Christmas company and thought I might save some time by freezing and reheating.

Hi Rosanne! Although I haven’t tested it out, it should freeze really well with the sauce. If you decide to experiment, let me know how it goes!

I’ve actually made this recipe a few times and I really love it. However, I’m not a huge fan of meat in a slow cooker. (I have followed the recipe using my crockpot multiple times).

I have actually seared the roast and used a large dutch oven to cook the meat in the oven with the lid and it came out just as tender and pulled just as easily.

I cheated with the meat and bought pre seasoned pork from Aldi. Seasoned the water with a bit of chicken salt. Cooking instructions were spot on! The meat was so tender and delicious, I could’ve eaten the whole thing by myself.
I personally found the sauce to be veryyyyyy overwhelming. I think I only used about 4 small ladles and kept some of the flavoured liquid. perhaps a little too much vinegar? And as someone who suffers from a bit of reflux, the smell alone was enough to trigger me. I ended up discarding almost the whole batch. I served it in a bun with slaw mix and thousand island dressing which was a great combo. It’s not a bad sauce, just not the one for me, so won’t rate it poorly on a personal preference! It was easy to make – I would however recommend halving the amount for that much meat. Even for a “saucy” dish, half would be more than sufficient.

This was the BEST pulled pork I have ever ate. I doubled the batch because I have a a family of 6. I was lucky to have left overs for work the next day after my growing boys finished up. I paired this with your one pot Mac and Cheese. Wow!!! Thank you for taking the time to share all of these indomitable recipes! I try at least 1 new one a week and I have yet to be disappointed. You rock Ashley!

For the first time, in the 8 years of his life, my kid shut up and ate his entire dinner and only stopped to comment on how good it was. For that, I give this 10 stars.

Question on the balsamic vinegar amount for the sauce? Is a 1 1/3 cups right?

My sauce was way too vinegary, and very thin. I didn’t like the taste and I love balsamic vinegar. Glad I just didn’t pour it over the pork before tasting it.

FAQs

Should pulled pork be covered in liquid in slow cooker? ›

Your liquid should not cover your pork in the slow cooker: it should only come up about a quarter of the way up the sides. The pork will make more liquid as it cooks, and you need to leave room for that. And 10 hours later, this huge hunk of meat is tender and ready.

What is the best liquid to cook pulled pork in? ›

Transfer everything to a large slow cooker and add a splash of liquid — water is great, but so is broth, apple juice, or beer if you have them handy. Cover and cook on low until the meat is tender and pulls apart easily.

Why do you put vinegar in pulled pork? ›

The vinegar adds contrast to the smoky flavor and cuts through the fat in the meat.

What is the secret to tender pulled pork? ›

Apple cider vinegar: Adds a little tanginess and helps to tenderize the pork. Without it, the pork tastes flat. Adding the vinegar wakes everything up. Fish sauce or Worcestershire: Seasons our cooking liquid and adds a nice burts of umami, which makes the pulled pork even more delicious.

Should I flip my pork shoulder in a slow cooker? ›

Close the Proofer and allow the pork to cook for a total of 10 or 11 hours. Midway during the slow cook process you can turn the pork over once. After 10 hours check the interior of the pork with a thermometer. We recommend a temperature of 195-200 °F / 90-93 °C for tender, juicy pork which pulls apart easily.

Can you overcook pulled pork in a slow cooker? ›

On low heat, cook for 8-10 hours; on high heat, cook for 5-6 hours. The pork should be fork-tender and easily shredded. Can you overcook pulled pork in a slow cooker? Yes, overcooking can lead to dry, tough meat.

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low? ›

A general rule of thumb from Luis Sanchez, senior category manager for the appliance manufacturer Breville: To go from "High" to "Low" (or vice versa), multiply (or divide) the original time by 1.5 to 2.5 hours. And as with the cooking times for specific ingredients, these times are approximate.

How do I get more flavor in my pulled pork? ›

The smoke flavor is much more intense after the pulled pork has been sitting overnight. I simply take a container from fridge, bring to room temperature and re-heat at 175-200 degrees in a glass container for an hour or two (add a little apple juice or sweetened cider vinegar if needed).

Should pulled pork be submerged in liquid? ›

Pour 1 1/2 cups liquid, such as low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth, tomato juice, light or amber beer, white or red wine, orange juice, or a mix of several liquids (and optional liquid smoke) over the pork. The pork should be only partially submerged, with some of the pork remaining above the surface of the liquid.

What does mustard do for pulled pork? ›

It's good to add a binder, which helps the rub stick to it. This can be olive oil, yellow mustard, or a spray oil like duck fat. For pork butt I usually go with mustard. It doesn't add any flavor to the finished product, but I like the way it holds the rub and the color it gives to the exterior early in the cook.

Do you put barbecue sauce on pulled pork before or after cooking? ›

Apply the sauce after the meat has been cooked. Depending on the cooking temperature and the type of sugar, a sweet sauce can get gummy or even burn. So, apply the sauce at the end, about 15-30 minutes before removing the pork to add rich flavor.

Is apple juice or apple cider better for pulled pork? ›

While I highly recommend using apple cider for this pulled pork, if you can't find any you could substitute with apple juice.

How do Chinese make pork so tender? ›

How do you tenderise pork for stir fry? Velveting is a Chinese technique that helps keep meat tender during stir frying. Adding cornstarch and bicarb to your meat during the marinating process helps to coat your meat, giving it a velvety feel that makes the meat feel extra soft.

Does pulled pork get more tender the longer you cook it? ›

To achieve tender and flavorful pulled pork, it's best to cook it slowly for a long time until it's easy to shred. This makes it a great dish to prepare in advance and serve for dinner later.

Does pork need to be fully submerged in a slow cooker? ›

Water or liquid is necessary to create steam. When cooking meat or poultry, the water or liquid level should cover the ingredients to ensure effective heat transfer throughout the crock. Some manufacturers of slow cookers recommend adding liquid to fill the stoneware 1/2 to 3/4 full.

How do you keep pulled pork moist in a slow cooker? ›

If it is expected to be served within a few hours after smoking, it is better to store it in a crockpot set at the lowest possible temperature. Additionally, spray chicken broth or apple juice on the meat to prevent it from losing more moisture in the crockpot.

Do you leave pulled pork in the juice? ›

Note: Another option is to leave the juice in the pan and pull the meat apart right there in those juices. This is not as healthy but it tastes amazing and the meat is SO juicy and flavorful! After the meat has cooled for about an hour, use a couple of forks to pull the meat into pieces.
